Pet Portrait Walkthrough (of sorts)

In this "tutorial", I will show you how I did this particular pet portrait:
So here are my tools. This is a colored pencil portrait, so no graphite pencils here! Except for the one I outline with typically, my trusty ol' mechanical pencil. 80% of the time I use Crayola and some variant of Prismacolor (Verithins are good for small areas/detail work, Premiers are good for blending/large areas, and any Prismacolor is just a really good colored pencil to have in general). You will see that I also have a Rosart! Boo, hiss. I'll be the first to tell you that Rosart colored pencils usually suck monkey butts, however they are good for layering. Which I do a lot of. It's an important part of how I use colored pencils. Moving along, now.
These are my reference pictures. As you can see, for one of the dogs I have three different light sources from which I must composite one for the actual portrait. I essentially take bits and pieces from all three in order to create the most pleasing image. The other dog is only seen in one picture, but luckily it's one with good lighting and a workable angle, so I don't have to worry about him.
So here's my underlying sketch! This is not a how-to-draw dogs tutorial, in case you were hoping for that...Dogs are fairly easy though, especially from the front! You can probably still see my foundational lines--a big circle for the head, with a cylinder shape for the muzzle, and two triangles for the ears. Now that I've placed them both on the page decently (as asked for by the client), mapped out the most important features (eyes, nose, direction of fur), let's go on to the next step.
It looks as though I've erased everything I just did. I did! I did erase everything. Well, mostly. It's hard to see in this photo, but there is still a faint outline--residue of the pencil that's more or less part of the paper now. It's all I need to continue. If you leave too much graphite on the paper, it will not blend with your colored pencils, and you'll have these ugly little dark marks poking out of the color (this is especially bad when you have lighter colors). Besides, at this point, we do not want to lean on our lines so much as building these dogs up by shape and color.
I always start of portraits with the nose. When you get that one figured out, it makes the rest of your color blocking easier--like having a center. Then I fill in the eyes. In the photos, these dogs had a bad case of the demon glow, but I'd asked the client as to their real color beforehand! (always a good idea) The key here is to make the pupils a darker color than the iris, as is the case with human eyes, but it's not always black.
Now I've started blocking in some of the color shapes for this dog's face. He's got typical German Shepard coloring, a mix of black/dark brown/tan. The one next to him is a solid black, and I've only just blocked him in (being a southpaw, I thought it better to work from the right side of the page over to reduce the chance of smudging). You can also see where the white gel pen makes its value known. I like to add little dots on the nose to punch in highlights, and also add a little eye shine. This eye shine can really make your subject look alive.
Here's an unfinished ear. I use a cool gray to help blend the peach with the black (warm gray works just as well).
And here's the finished ear! I've brought in some dark brown as well, to help blend, and because it adds a richer quality to the black.
There you have it! I've laid down the first (and second) layers for the facial markings and his neck fur. I typically use wider, longer strokes for the first layer, but when you're blending colors or when you're adding the final layer of color, I use smaller, quicker strokes to mimic the look of actual fur. Unless the fur is longer.
That dark brown really comes in handy for blending black with tan. Wooo! This dog is now completed, so we move onto his friend!
Rinse and repeat for this dog. He is a solid black unlike his friend, so the only colors I use here are black and a cool gray for some of the lighter spots.
Even though he's completely black, it's important to show the direction his fur grows in, instead of just coloring in the area. I left his fur with that shiny quality as it looks in the photos.
And wa-la! We are done! I've gone in with my white gel pen and added little highlights of fur in some places, and also included a sort of dividing line between the dogs so they stand out from each other. Unfortunately, my camera's chosen to reflect most of its light off of the black dog so he looks really washed out in this picture, but rest assured, the portraits almost always have richer color in real life. I hope this has been enlightening and somewhat helpful and useful; if nothing else, then a window into the way I work. :)

I've revamped my character, Max, who is the primary protagonists for my story Enigma (soon to be webcomic!).
Needless to say, it's great to have something that I can finally show people for commissions, art trades, etc as well as something for my own use!

Here are some things I've done in the past month since my last update.
I got into Bioware's Dragon Age series. This is Ser Pounce-a-lot. I love these games, and the art direction is just firing up my creative juices like woah!
This is "Horus". I was not sure which one I liked better, so you can find both available as prints in my Society6 store.
And this is the calender entry for August (for the Siggraph 2013 calender at my school). August brings to mind summer, which brings to mind water...which for me equals mermaids.

Here are some sketches for things I'm working on lately... Designing a bomber jacket emblem for a family friend.
And a character design for a blog header, commissioned by one of my mom's friends.
I also finished another pet portrait--got to draw bunnies for the first time! Also for a family friend.
Moral of the story is, I laugh at those who say your family can't help your career. (Because I've gotten so, so many commissions from people who know my parents!)
Lastly, here's something I just started today to work on in between job hunting, commissions, and video games. It's one of those Artist With Their Original Characters pieces. I have too many characters to name, but these guys could probably be considered like, different aspects of my own self. Calypso is from the Dragon Raiders Project, Max is from Enigma, and Skye is from Enigma: Viridian.

[fanart] Brave tribute

I've been so excited for Brave since I first heard Pixar would be making a movie set in Scotland, and I was not disappointed when it came to theaters. :) I saw the midnight premiere this summer with my mom and a couple friends (which made the experience even more amazing). Honestly it's the kind of movie I would have loved to work on! Here's my humble fanart to this lovely movie, and the step-by-step on my work (the final step is the finished product).

Cartoons

Here are a couple images that are a little different than what I normally do, but were nevertheless fun to work on. This first one is an art test I did for a local company about a month or so ago. I ended up not getting the job, but hey, it happens. What's going on in this scene is very complicated and probably won't make much sense; I'm not even allowed to disclose the details because it's covered by NDA.
And just recently I finished this as a commission for some friends of my parents who are friends with Eddie Basha...who is friends with former AZ governor Rose Mofford. It's a birthday gift, so I hope it's okay to post this!

Sketch Dump #1

Howdy folks. Can I just say that I'm super envious of all y'all at SDCC this year? There I said it. I've yet to go to a California con, and I've been dying to for years but sadly, I'm in a constant state of broke-ness. Last week I went up north for a few days to escape the heat and sketched a fair bit. I have a new Moleskine, and I love it. You can draw on both sides of the page and it won't smudge. *3*
Mix of fanart and original characters. I've been sort of addicted to MTV's Teen Wolf lately--because of the excellency that is Stiles. So I drew his face a couple times. Doodled a Pitch from DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians, Legacy-era Tron, as well as a couple Julie heads from Motorcity (which is one of the best animated shows out right now).

I'm officially out of school for the rest of my life! That is, until I figure out where I want to go to pursue my Master's. And decide what to pursue it in. :S While I'm looking for a job/jobs, I'm determined not to let my skills regress. I have plans to make another 3D model of my character Calypso, as well as finish the 3D model of the famous motorcycle from Akira that I started almost a year ago. I also have entered a couple of different art contests/challenges. Fun stuff; I'll try and post them here when I finish. For now, here's a birthday gift I whipped up for my aunt. It's her two cocker spaniels, Jasmine and Clancy, playing in the snow in Prescott. Used: colored pencils, oil pastels, and white gel pen.

Stuff.

So! Things are coming to an end. I graduate from college in two weeks--yay! Here is my finished demo reel:


And in other news, I finished yet another pet portrait. In my three years of doing pet portraits, this was the first time I got asked to draw a cat--guess dog people are more obsessed with their pets, or something. ;) Ironically, this cat is the same breed as my own cat so that was pretty cool. I think Maine Coons are beautiful, beautiful creatures and it's amusing to me how timid my cat Hershey is when he's so much bigger than the rest of my family's animals.


I've been applying to jobs all over the place so hopefully by the next time I post, I will have been successful! :)

WIP - 3D Animation Studio

Final project progress! I've been using the Hogan rig for all of my Maya animations in the past, but this time I wanted to use something more human. I couldn't decide between the Andy rig or the Blake rig, so I ended up using both. Not sure which one I like best; each one has some nifty features.

D&D Art Order Challenge

Recently I decided to enter the D&D Challenge on The Art Order. I only found out about the event a week before the deadline, so I didn't have much time to come up with something, but I really wanted to try something new. My entry is for Creatures, and I chose to do a tribe cook based on pre-done character references. Creatures are somewhat out of my comfort zone, but it wasn't as hard to do as I'd thought. In fact, I really had fun. I'm going to definitely enter more of the challenges on The Art Order. :)

I'm not striving to make this horse super ultra-realistic, but I don't want to go the cartoony route either.

[video] Illustrators of the Future Win

This was a nice surprise to receive in my inbox!



I entered the L. Ron Hubbard's Writers/Illustrators of the Future contest in 2008/2009 as just one of the many scholarship opportunities I'd gathered as a highschool senior. When my submission got enough kudos to move onto the next stage, that was cool enough for me. But then I found out I'd be illustrating the short story of another contest entrant and that I would, along with about 15-20 other writers and illustrators, be getting published in Vol. 26 of Writers of the Future. It's a pretty substantial science fiction/fantasy anthology. I feel extremely honored to be included with such a talented group of people!

Unfortunately, I didn't get to attend both the workshop and the awards ceremony for the vol. 26 winners. It was held in 2010 and I'd just begun entering my core classes at college--I didn't want to interrupt my schooling. (Plus, I couldn't afford to stay in LA for a week.) My parents and I didn't think too much of it until we saw this video last week and realized that no, this awards ceremony was actually a huge deal. And now I feel really bad for missing it. (I'm still broke, though.)

But here's the clip with Simon Cooper, whose amazing, enthralling short story 'Confliction' I got to illustrate, and my own segment that I was not present for. I was wowed that they actually showed my other submissions, too!

Ice Cream

I made this one day when I was craving ice cream but didn't have any in my freezer.
Looks ALMOST good enough to eat, right?

I am getting some weird shading on my bowl, which shouldn't be happening because it's completely smoothed. The bumpmap might be the reason. Or something completely different. I'm still working on it. (Same with the spoon. Spoons have such weird material!)

Life update + Here there be dragons...

Apologies for not posting in a while. I've been doing random art for people as well as personal stuff for myself, and trying to get the hang of LOTRO while polishing up a ton of animations and branding stuff for my portfolio. Less than six months until graduation!

Here's a commission I finished about a month or so ago. 

And ironically 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. I did this for my school's branch of SIGGRAPH.

Hopefully my next update won't be in two months...
